On August 6, 2024, the Africa Peace Missions Institute (APMI) marked another milestone by launching a Digital Education Community Hub (DECH) in Madiany, Siaya County, Kenya. This initiative, aimed at empowering local communities through accessible education and vocational training, underscores APMI’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and peacebuilding in the region.
The launch event was graced by David Hubert, the Founder and Executive Director of Canadian Peacemakers International (CPI), the principal sponsor of the DECH program. CPI partnered with the Dorcas Endowment Fund to bring this transformative project to life. Joining him were Rev. Patrick Obonde, CPI’s Program Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Pamela Obonde, the Programs Director at APMI, both of whom reiterated the importance of digital and vocational training in addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by communities in Kenya.
“This Digital Education Community Hub represents hope and opportunity,” said Dave Hubert during his keynote address. “By equipping individuals with skills and knowledge, we are not only transforming lives but also contributing to the creation of resilient and peaceful communities.”
As APMI continues to expand its footprint across Kenya and beyond, the DECH initiative is a testament to the power of partnerships in driving positive change. With its focus on innovation, inclusion, and empowerment, the Madiany hub sets the stage for a brighter, more sustainable future for the region.
The hub enrolled its first cohort of 50 students, who will undertake a diverse range of vocational courses, including computer studies, peace leadership, hairdressing, and dressmaking. The courses are delivered through Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL), a cutting-edge approach designed to enhance learning outcomes and accessibility.
This launch followed the success of the maiden Peace Leadership Conference Kenya 2024, held at APMI’s Leadership STEPS in Madiany. The conference served as a platform to explore strategies for peacebuilding and leadership, reinforcing the role of education in fostering harmony and development.
